Referred to as the “Improved Henry”, the Product 1866 lever-action repeater was the 1st product for being identified as a Winchester. Its distinct brass coloured body (technically an early form of bronze, also referred to as “gunmetal”) gave rise towards the nickname “Yellow Boy”.

I picked up on an more mature topic/publish where others that have stated that a barrel obtaining the “Oval P” could have been equipped by Winchester:
Here is a scan with the Winchester CE Blizard letter for the reference. He researched the origin with the proof markings in response to an inquiry.
I can not identify accurately in the event the “Oval P” was very first used based on my function but I could make this observation. The Oval P proof stamp is just located on barrels that have a Fashion three barrel deal with which is found around the still left aspect in the barrel. This position wasn't typical until finally 1910 to the Product 1892 rifles. No barrel that has among the sooner barrel tackle types or best of barrel positions are marked having an “Oval P” proof.
Its a great day any time you uncover that small nugget of fact. I enormously appreciate all that have contributed to The subject. Chris

In a simple substitution concern, earning new parts from scratch ,In the event the ordered substitution part with accurate configuration, is previously while in the manufacturing facility is not really a feasible selection
For barrels & receivers built after 1905: Receivers getting the “WP” evidence but no “WP” or “Oval P” evidence on the barrel would indicate the barrel was replaced outside of Winchester utilizing a pre-1905 barrel.
I don’t suggest to litter up this Winchester gun shop return policy thread but figured I'd write-up them for those fellas that hadn’t seen the info.
